Course Descriptions
The course discusses the major themes in the diplomatic and political history fo Europe during the period under consideration.
These themes include, Napoleon Bonaparte, the Congress of Vienna (1815), the unification of Italy and Germany, the Age of Imperialism, Underlying courses of World War 1, the Versailles Treaty, the rise of Totalitarianism, the Cold War and the Collapse of Communism in the Soviet Union and Easter Europe.
Course Aim
The main aim of the course is to provide the student with deep understanding of the major events and themes in the diplomatic and political history of Europe in te 19th and 20th Centuries.
This course will analyze the linkage of the various themes in the evolution of European history vis-a-viz their impact and consequences on nation states and people both in Europe and other parts of the World in the 19th and 20th centuries.
From this perspective, this course has the following objectives:
Course Objectives
To achieve the aims of the course, it has the following objectives;
· Analyse and assess the major themes in the diplomatic history of Europe
· Identify specific individual and non-state actors in the changes they initiated in the diplomatic history of Europe
· Discuss the historical evolution in the 19th and 20th centuries
· Discuss the linkage between European history and diplomatic history
· Analyse the importance and the role played by the various nation state in decision making
· Analyse the importance of nation states, domestic and foreign policy decision makers
· Identify and discuss the contributions of naitonalists and leaders in the execution of decisions they initiated
